OPERATION CLEAN SWEEP SET FOR APRIL 26 IN SCOTTSBLUFF, GERING, AND TERRYTOWN
The cities of Scottsbluff, Gering, and Terrytown are proud to announce Operation Clean Sweep, a community-wide cleanup event taking place on Saturday, April 26. This collaborative effort is a call to action for residents, businesses, and organizations to come together in the spirit of service and civic pride to help beautify our shared home.
Operation Clean Sweep is more than just a spring-cleaning initiative—it is a proactive approach to community preparedness. By organizing volunteers to pick up litter in alleys, the event also serves as a training ground for coordinated community response in the aftermath of a natural disaster or severe weather emergency.
“This is about building a stronger, more resilient community,” said Randy Meininger, former Scottsbluff Mayor. “Not only are we making our cities look great, but we’re also practicing the kind of teamwork and quick response that would be critical in a real emergency.”
As part of Operation Clean Sweep, residents of Scottsbluff and Gering are encouraged to bring their items to the landfill rather than place them by the dumpster as part of Free Landfill Day on Saturday, April 26, from 8 a.m. to noon. This special event gives community members a chance to dispose of approved household items at no cost. To take advantage of Free Landfill Day, residents must bring a current city utility bill along with a matching driver’s license. Each household is allowed one standard-size pickup load or an 8-foot trailer, and all loads must be properly covered and items need to be bagged. Accepted items include up to 4 tires (no rims), 2 appliances without Freon, and 5 gallons of uncontaminated used oil per resident. hazardous waste and commercial loads will not be accepted. Residents of Terrytown, please take your items to Waste Connections at 710 Country Club Road between 8 a.m. to noon.
Residents unable to bring items to the landfill are encouraged to have their items beside their normal dumpster. NO yard waste, batteries, liquid paint, hazardous waste, oil, antifreeze, tires or rims. Please have all items bagged and in your designated trash area by 7 a.m.
Volunteers for Operation Clean Sweep are encouraged to meet at Westway Christian Church, 701 W. 27th Street, Scottsbluff. Participants are advised to wear long pants and sturdy, closed-toe shoes. There are limited supplies, so please bring your own gloves, safety glasses and safety vests. Volunteers with pickups with licensed trailers are welcome and encouraged to participate.
More details, including meeting points and times, will be shared on each city’s official website and social media pages.
Together, we can make a visible difference in our community while preparing for the unexpected. Let’s roll up our sleeves, pitch in, and show what community collaboration can achieve—one street, one park, and one neighborhood at a time.
